SuSE Linux 8.2 on the ASUS S1300N

Preface

This page is based on Sebastian Henschels description to setup Debian on the S1300N published on www.tuxmobile.org. Many thanks for his excellent description. See his page first. This one only describes the differences for SuSE users.

I chose the ASUS S1300N because it is lightweight, performant and one of the rare notebooks one can buy without Windows bundled.

Installed System

This system was installed with SuSE Linux 8.2 with Kernel 2.4.22, Alsa 0.9.3c and KDE3.1.

Installation

Standard installation procedure went successful with yast. LAN-, Audio- and VGA-hardware was detected properly, also external USB Mouse. With some modifications to XF86Config (1280x1024 as second monitor resolution in row) a screen resolution of 1280x1024 on the external monitor is possible (switched with Ctrl+Alt+Fn+"+").

IDE performance problems

After standard installation (with kernel 2.4.20) the harddisc "creeped at the amazing speed of 2 MB/s". Compiling and installing kernel 2.4.22 with ACPI and ASUS-ACPI patches and installation of a custom DSDT page in the init-ramdisk fixed this problem.

ALSA

The ALSA-Modules had to be compiled from source. With ALSA-versions 0.9.7 and 0.9.6 a very scratchy sound was produced. With ALSA 0.9.3c sound works well.
